2005 expeditions Old Earth's summer expeditions will take place in Desolation Sound, 200 miles Northwest of Seattle. Here we will sail and paddle among the dramatic fjords and evergreen-crowned islands of this remote archipelago, making camps by night on beaches hemmed by rock, cedar forests and the sea. The Umiak will be our vessel - a skin boat built on a 2,000 year old pan-arctic tradition. This vessel was developed by the Inuit people for the purpose of carrying large amounts of gear across rough open bodies of water when moving camps, as well as for hunting seal and walrus. Traditionally made from stretching walrus or bearded seal skin over a wooden frame, these boats were light enough to carry on shore, and flip over for temporary shelter. Our Umiak is a 26' modern hybrid, made with ballistic nylon stretched over a traditional wooden frame. The result is a very lightweight and seaworthy craft. All trips start in Seattle, where we provide van transportation from the Seattle airport to Heather Island. Once on Heather, we will have a chance to organize our equipment, and get to know each other under the roof of our solar and wind-powered cabin. The following day we will load up the Umiak and head out for Desolation Sound. The last night of each trip will be spent at Heather Island as well, before we drive back to Seattle the next day, arriving at about 8:00 pm. Trip price includes transportation to and from Heather Island. Price also includes all meals (made from high-quality mostly local and organic ingredients), and group equipment. Personal gear is available for rent or purchase.
